"Don’t let them fool you; reggae and dancehall has always been and arguably still is more popular than hip hop in areas that birth these MCs."

Marvin Sparks: Marvin Sparks vs DJ Snips: “Grime is not hip hop” [Video]
LOL
first of all who really says ‘true school hip hop’? ugh.
i thought the hip-hop backpack intelligentsia died out years ago, I didn’t know it was still thriving. But that makes sense, who else is buying all this streetwear? Anyway, y’all need to give Jamaican music it’s due, and as an American when I see the Grime/Bashment videos they remind me much more of dancehall than hip-hop… the use of riddims and ‘pull up’ and the faster tempo… also the slang is a lot more ‘shottas’ than ‘new jack city’…

reggae/dancehall birthed hiphop, jungle, grime, azonto, naijapop and its bastard child reggaeton even when it was just called spanish reggae…
